How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa? (2026 Guide)

August 2, 2026 · 7 min read

South African website quotes run from around R2,500 for a template build to R80,000+ for a fully custom site. Before comparing numbers, it helps to know what separates the bottom of that range from the top.

What each price band actually buys

**R2,500 - R8,000.** A template site, usually WordPress or a drag-and-drop builder, three to five pages, your logo dropped in. You write the copy and source the images yourself. Fine for a business that needs a basic presence this month.

**R8,000 - R20,000.** The band most salons, clinics, restaurants, and service businesses should target. Five to eight pages, mobile-first, a working contact or booking flow, basic on-page SEO, and someone arranging the content rather than pasting it in raw.

**R25,000 - R60,000.** Custom design rather than a theme, copywriting included, proper SEO structure, faster hosting, and integrations like WhatsApp, booking systems, or payment gateways. Right when the site needs to generate leads, not just exist.

**R70,000+.** E-commerce with real product volume, custom functionality, or multi-branch businesses. Rarely necessary for a single-location salon, spa, or restaurant.

The recurring costs most quotes leave out

The build price is not the annual price. Budget separately for these:

**Domain:** roughly R150 - R300 a year for a .co.za, more for a .com.

**Hosting:** R1,000 - R6,000 a year depending on quality. Cheap shared hosting is the most common cause of a slow site, and load speed affects both Google rankings and whether a visitor waits around to book.

**SSL certificate:** usually free through Let's Encrypt. If a quote lists this as a separate paid line, ask why.

**Maintenance:** updates, backups, and fixes. Either R800 - R3,000 a month on a retainer, or your own time.

A R15,000 site with R8,000 of annual running costs is not a R15,000 site once you look past year one. Ask for the full first-year total before comparing proposals.

What actually drives the price up

**Page count.** Every page is design, content, and testing. Eight pages is not slightly more work than four, it's roughly double.

**Who writes the copy.** The most underestimated line item. If a quote doesn't explicitly include copywriting, that work is yours, and most projects stall for weeks right there.

**Photography.** Stock images are free and look it. Real photography of your space, your team, and your work is the single biggest difference between a site that converts and one that doesn't.

**Custom vs template.** A template constrains layout to what the theme allows. Custom costs more and takes longer, and for many local businesses a well-chosen template is genuinely the right call.

**Integrations.** Booking systems, payment gateways, and WhatsApp click-to-chat each add real setup work.

The Johannesburg / Cape Town / Durban difference

Johannesburg agencies price closest to corporate budgets, especially in Sandton and Rosebank. Cape Town runs close behind, with a design-led market charging for visual craft. Durban is typically 15-25% cheaper for comparable scope, and remote studios have narrowed that gap further, where a designer sits matters far less than it used to.

How to compare quotes without getting misled

Normalise every proposal against six questions: how many pages, is copywriting included, is photography included, who hosts it and at what annual cost, how many revision rounds, and do you own everything at the end.

Most apparent price gaps disappear once you answer those. A quote that looks 40% cheaper usually excludes copy, excludes photography, and caps revisions at one.

**Ownership matters most.** You should end with control of the domain, the hosting account, and the site files. Some cheap builds keep the site on the agency's own account, which means you can't leave without rebuilding from scratch.

The honest answer

For most South African service businesses, a genuinely good website costs between R8,000 and R20,000 to build, plus roughly R2,000 to R9,000 a year to run. Below that band you're buying a template and doing the rest yourself. Above it you're paying for things a single-location business rarely needs.
