Reels vs. Static Posts: What Actually Grows Your Account

July 22, 2026 · 5 min read

The 'Reels are everything' advice is half right. Reels are Instagram's discovery engine, but static posts still do jobs Reels can't. Growth comes from using each for what it's good at.

What Reels actually do

Reels get shown to people who don't follow you, they're the only format with meaningful cold reach. If your goal is new eyeballs, Reels are the vehicle. A local business posting three decent Reels weekly will out-reach one posting daily static content, almost every time.

What static posts actually do

Static posts and carousels serve people already on your profile: they're your menu, your proof, your pricing, your portfolio. A prospect deciding whether to book scrolls your grid, that's where statics convert.

The split that works for local businesses

Roughly 60/40 Reels to static for growth phases, closer to 40/60 when you're at capacity and just maintaining presence. Pin your three best-converting posts (offer, results, pricing) so deciders see them first.

Stop making Reels that are just slideshows

Photo-dump Reels with trending audio underperform actual motion, process clips, transformations, behind-the-scenes. The algorithm reads watch time; static images in video wrappers get skipped.

Captions still matter on Reels

Reels captions carry your keywords for Instagram SEO ('karachi salon', 'balayage specialist'). Two lines minimum: what this is, and what to do next.
