Website Redesign Checklist for Service Businesses

July 22, 2026 · 6 min read

A website redesign done wrong can erase years of SEO equity overnight. Done right, it lifts bookings within weeks. The difference is planning. Here's the checklist we use on every rebuild.

Before touching anything: inventory what works

Export your current pages, rankings, and traffic sources. Any page earning search traffic needs either a place in the new site or a 301 redirect to its closest equivalent. Deleting pages without redirects is the single most common redesign mistake.

Keep your URLs, or redirect every one

If /services stays /services, nothing to do. If URLs change, map every old URL to its new home with a 301. No exceptions, even low-traffic pages carry link equity.

Rebuild around one conversion goal

Every page should push toward the single action that makes you money: booking, calling, or messaging. If a section doesn't move a visitor toward that, it's decoration.

Mobile isn't a version, it's the site

Most local-business traffic is mobile. Design mobile-first: thumb-reachable buttons, fast load, sticky call-to-action, no desktop-first layouts squeezed down.

Preserve and extend your SEO plumbing

Title tags, meta descriptions, schema markup, canonical tags, sitemap, all of it needs to survive the move. Rebuild them into the new site before launch, not after rankings drop.

Test before and after launch

Before: click every link, submit every form, test on real phones. After: crawl the live site for 404s, verify redirects, resubmit the sitemap, and watch Search Console for a couple of weeks.

The 48-hour launch window

Search engines recrawl active sites within days. Small ranking wobble in week one is normal; sustained drops mean something's broken, usually redirects or noindex tags left on by accident.

We handle redesigns end-to-end, including all the SEO preservation, for salons, spas, restaurants, and service businesses. Get a free mockup first, see the direction before committing to anything.
